Deviations is a collaborative video project dedicated to celebrating and highlighting the importance of queer space and time that sits outside the hegemonic structures governing daily life. The work has been specifically produced for installation in Fortitude Valley, Brisbane a site where queer spaces have been carved out for decades. From nightclubs, sex clubs, art spaces, community centres, HIV/ AIDS clinics, pride events and activist meetings – the Valley has played a pivotal role in Brisbane’s Queer history.
On the flipside, it has also represented an inherently dangerous and exclusionary space – where queers are vulnerable to discrimination, abuse, violence, policing, and sometimes murder. This project presents an inclusive vision of a queer party in Brisbane that is driven by community contribution. The footage used in this has been acquired through community submissions and will act as a temporary monument to queer party that is representative of queer social structures and a way of life that exists off the record.
